Daphne Floyd is a Berea College Freshman. The outcome of her research project was a realistic fictional short story entitled “After the Ash: The House Comes Down.” She is a student in creative writing and contemporary Irish literature courses taught by Gavin Colton, Visiting Assistant Professor, Department of English.
Her story is based on heard and seen media material from Berea’s Special Collections and Archives online media collections. Daphne says the story tells of an Appalachian family’s grief and love for one another. Its themes include the beauty of the land, family, love, death, grief, rage, and labor (both in terms of exploitation and craftsmanship). The media sources drawn upon to enhance and build the story include video of a West Virginia house demolition. Audio material includes interviews with a potter, woodworker, corn shuck doll maker, and a Black community activist. Musical inspiration is from the Berea College Black Ensemble’s version of the gospel song “I’m Gonna Work.”
