A town patron is a member of the community not affiliated with the college. Town patrons must fall within the following guidelines:
- Is over the age of 18
- Lives within the 40403 zip code.
- Persons living outside the Berea City zip code are welcome to use library material within the building or request Interlibrary Loans from their local library
- Has a valid Kentucky Driver’s license or valid Kentucky state identification card
Library Card
A town patron must present his or her Berea College library card in order to check out or renew materials from Hutchins Library.
- To obtain a card, the patron must present:
- A valid Kentucky Driver’s license or state ID, with their mailing address and
- A current mailing (such as a utility bill) with their name and address
- There is no charge for the first library card; there is a $2.00 replacement charge for a lost or damaged card.
- Town patrons are responsible for all items checked out on their card.
- Library cards are not transferrable.
Loan Period
The standard loan period for town patrons is 21 days. Town patrons may not check out any form of media or course reserve materials.
Renewals
Books can be once, in person, if it has not been requested by another library user.
- Books must be brought to the library to be renewed.

Fines, Charges, and Library Privileges
Overdue fines begin the day after an item is due. Overdue fines are $0.25 per day for each item. After 21 days overdue the item is assumed to be lost and the final overdue notice is sent. If the item is not returned prior to the billing statement, a replacement fee of $50.00 per item will be charged.
- After a replacement fee is charged, the patron has a 90 day period to return the book for a refund of $40.00 per item. The remaining $10.00 is the maximum overdue fine charged per item.
- Borrowing privileges will be suspended if a town patron has any overdue items or outstanding charges.
Holds
Town borrowers may not place holds nor recall library material.
Interlibrary Loans
- ILL services are not available for town patrons at Hutchins Library. Please see your local public library for such services.
