Hinduism Spring 2025

Introduction

Melville Dewey published the first edition of the Dewey Decimal System in 1876. We may be surprised that some 150 years latter how much of its late nineteenth century world view remains, particularly in the 200 range, Religion. Christianity dominates the classification system. When it was created non-Christian religions were considered curiosities and their adherents were seen as candidates for conversion.  The focus on Christianity remains today. You will find the major world religions relegated to the 290 range, Other Religions. Hinduism is classed as 294.5.  Additional works can be found between 200-09, General Religion. You may find works in Philosophy of Hinduism in 181, Eastern Philosophy.
