Howard Prize

The Howard Prize at Berea College was founded by steel magnate Clarence H. Howard and provided a gold or cash award to the highest scholar from each of the four divisions of the school.

Letters between William J. Hutchins and Clarence H. Howard can be found in the Berea College Archives filed in RG 11, Awards, Howard Prize.

Howard was President of the Commonwealth Steel Company in Granite City, Illinois, a fairly progressive and educationally-minded concern which participated in employee profit sharing and employee education. Howard died in 1931, shortly after retiring.
