Materials in Special Collections and Archives

What is it?

The Berea College Sound Archives is especially strong in holdings that document Appalachian music and culture. These holdings include many examples of traditional music and other expressive culture, including ballads and songs, fiddle and banjo tunes, old-time string band music, folktales and legends, religious music and preaching, and interviews with performers, church members, and crafts people.

The largest portion of the collection is made up of such primary source material as field recordings and concerts, radio programs, oral history reviews, symposia, and lectures. Commercial recordings include LPs, 78s, cassettes, and CDs. An in-house database readily allows detailed searching by title, performer, subject, and geographic location.

How do I find it?

The Sound Archives are organized by range (aisle) and shelf. Items may be further categorized by box.
