Every so often, there will be patrons that give staff and students problems for various reasons: they do not like our policy, they do not want to follow or do not understand the library policies, or they are simply creating a disturbance. There are different ways of dealing with these people whether they are students or public patrons.
During such situations:
- Try to speak to the patron nicely and ask them to stop what they are doing. If they do not stop, Public Safety will be called and they will be asked to leave the area.
- If you feel uncomfortable talking to a patron about misconduct, feel free to contact a staff member or building manager and they will handle the situation.
- Regardless of the situation, it is important to remember that you can always call Public Safety (x3333) if you or your coworkers are uncomfortable in any way.
- In general, always be aware of who is coming in and out of the library. If you have a bad feeling about someone, or a patron is making you feel uncomfortable, please call Public Safety and keep an eye on the patron until an officer arrives. Please be careful not to profile the patron.
If the issue was significant, make note of it in writing to your labor supervisor. If possible, include the name of the problem patron in case a similar situation happens in the future.
