October 17-20, 2024: "Breaking Silence" A multi-day gathering honoring Janis Ian and celebrating the opening of the Janis Ian Archives at Berea College. The event included a dedication ceremony; an archival exhibition and open house; live presentations by guitar maker Richard Hoover, poet Jane Hirshfield, and photographer Peter Cunningham; a theatrical production; a documentary movie preview; carillon concerts; a tribute concert; and more! https://www.berea.edu/janisian

September 24, 2024: "Reading Local" Lunch-and-Learn focusing on the occupational folklife of Rural Public Librarians in Kentucky. Led by Folklorist Emily Hilliard. Location: Hutchins Library. 

 

April 10, 2024: "A Death So Long" tells the story of Kentucky cave explorer Floyd Collins, presented by Caitlyn Rahschulte. Location: Hutchins Library.

 

April 9, 2024: Zine workshop "Society's CENSORED Child" led by Peter Morphew and Mandy Martinez. Location: Hutchins Library.

 

February 20, 2024: KET will host a free preview screening of Becoming bell hooks at Lexington's Lyric Theatre at 6:30 PM on Tuesday, February 20. For additional information, visit KET.org/bellhooks. This documentary was the result, in part, of numerous research visits to SCA to study the bell hooks papers. The collection is represented in the production.

December 1, 2023: The Great Spoonbread Recipe and Story Roundup! Please join us for a day of sharing family recipes and stories with Folklorist Emily Hilliard. Location: Hutchins Library.

November 27: "Crafting a Community Cookbook: A Zine Making Event" will be held in the Hutchins Library Flex Space. (Click the image for full details.)

 

November 17: Special Collections and Archives welcomes you to meet 2023 Media Archives Fellows Grace Rogers and Blakeley Burger. Rogers and Burger are both studying fiddle music. However, their project goals are quite different, demonstrating the usefulness of SCA resources in diverse ways. Please join us in the Reading Room (Hutchins Library Room 130) for brief presentations from our visiting scholars. 

 

November 16: Folklorist Emily Hilliard presented "Friends of Coleslaw: The Folklore of the West Virginia Hot Dog" as part of the Carter G. Woodson Center's "Bites of History" series. Location: Carter G. Woodson Center.
