AI policies are set by individual instructors of all courses offered on campus. All Berea College students are expected to adhere to the AI policy of the courses they are currently enrolled in. Please speak to your professor(s) if you have questions or concerns about the use of generative AI for your class(es).

Any student use of generative AI must be (1) authorized by your instructor(s) and (2) cited appropriately. 

Generative AI is new and developing technology. Most citation styles have not yet caught up to it. Here's what we know so far:

  This website extension saves your chatGPT or Bard conversations and creates a URL, which allows readers to reference the original conversation used by the author. This tool is particularly useful for creating citations.

Citing generative AI content for specific referencing styles

For most citation styles, there are no specific guidelines for citing ChatGPT or other generative AI yet. Content from generative AI is a nonrecoverable source since it cannot be retrieved or linked.

We recommend that you base the citation for generative AI content on the citation style for personal communication or correspondence unless the citation style has specific guidelines for AI already. 

Check the citation style used in your course for how to cite generative AI or follow the format of these examples.

MLA
