The Berea College German Club is a student organization led by Berea College students, mostly students majoring in German Language. The purpose of the German Club is to bring together Berea students learning German language in meetings, where they can have an opportunity to learn more about German culture and to improve their conversation skills in the German language. In short, the goal of the German club is to broaden and increase participants’ international and cultural awareness.
The German Club meets almost every Saturday night of the week. Saturday meetings are usually designed as movie nights. Most of the movies are based on the historical past of Germany and the German culture. For instance, previously watched historical and cultural movies were:
The Counterfeiters
Das Leben
Der Anderen
Good-bye, Lenin!
Faust
Nosferatu
Der Himmel über Berlin
Lola rennt
Angst essen Seele auf
The movies are screened with either German or English subtitles to help some non-German speaking students to enjoy them. After the movie the student audience usually discusses and analyzes the movie and explores various themes of German filmography.
In addition, sometimes the German Club meets on weekday evenings, usually for a (board) game night or for presentations prepared by the students who have traveled abroad, specifically to Germany or Austria during their summer term or their semester abroad. The games played in the German Club are in German, which helps the students build their vocabulary knowledge and practice their language skills.
In the past, the German club has traveled on various field trips, such as to the Germania Society’s Christkindmarkt, Jungle Jim’s, Children’s Opera Brundibar and the Oktoberfest in Cincinnati, Ohio. The German club has also volunteered in various on-campus events, such as Christmas Caroling at Berea Hospital (St. Joseph Hospital) and the fundraising sale of German Chocolate Advent Calendars to Berea Community; and off-campus at Old St. Mary’s Church in Cincinnati. Moreover, the Club has participated in Homecoming parades in 2000 and 2004, and the Berea Christmas parade.
The Berea College German Club is open to and welcomes all Berea College students. The president or vice-president announces German Club meetings and the officer meetings through e-mail. Each officer of the club follow his or her own set of duties as listed in the German Club By-Laws and German Club Constitution.
