Many online books are electronic versions of works in the public domain and have been scanned. Remember, there can always be errors due to scanning problems and transcription errors even in the best of online resources.
The Internet Archive is building a digital library of Internet sites and other cultural artifacts in digital form. Like a paper library, we provide free access to researchers, historians, scholars, and the general public. These items are downloadable on to a variety of devices.
The Hathi Trust Digital Library brings together the immense collections from partner institutions in a digital form. Many works published before 1924 are online in a full text format. You can access these works online but they are not downloadable.
LOC and the University of Michigan provide this full text online collection of some 1,500 books dealing with a wide range of topics. The collection is keyword searchable or you can browse by title, author or subject.
Country Studies, they are now being prepared as stand-alone reference aides for all countries in the series, as well as for a number of additional countries of interest. The profiles offer reasonably current country information independent of the existence of a recently published Country Study and will be updated annually or more frequently as events warrant. Google Book Search allows you to search for full text editions of books online in the public domain which were published before 1924. these works are no longer under copyright protection. At times the “partial view” option can assist in making decisions concerning ILL. Google Books help locate publications not accessible to Berea students in other formats. When searching for primary sources from the 19th and 18th centuries, Google Books can prove valuable.
