About the Zoom H1N Recorder

The Zoom H1n is a compact, portable digital audio recorder perfect for field recordings, interviews, lectures, music practice sessions, and backup audio for video productions. It features a built-in X/Y stereo microphone and records to microSD cards. It is available for checkout in Hutchins Library's Library of Things.

Front Panel

  • Built-in Microphone: X/Y stereo condenser microphones at top

Power and Storage Setup

Step 1: Insert Battery

  1. Open Battery Compartment: Slide cover on back
  2. Insert AA Battery: Follow polarity markings (+/-)
  3. Close Compartment: Ensure secure closure
  4. Battery Types:
    • Alkaline: ~10 hours recording time
    • NiMH Rechargeable: ~10 hours, can charge via USB
    • Lithium: ~13 hours (best for cold weather)

Step 2: Insert MicroSD Card

  1. Open Side Panel: Access microSD slot
  2. Insert Card: Push until it clicks (facing label up)
  3. Supported Cards:
    • MicroSD: Up to 2GB
    • MicroSDHC: 4GB to 32GB (recommended)
    • Class 4 or higher for reliable recording
  4. Format Card: Menu → SD Card → Format (required for first use)

Step 3: Initial Power On

  1. Slide Power Switch: From OFF to ON position
  2. Initial Setup: Follow on-screen prompts
  3. Date/Time: Set current date and time for file timestamps
  4. Display: Familiarize yourself with main recording screen
