Conversations concerning the United Kingdom

One Life, Two Cultures celebrates cultural diversity by collecting the experiences of African and Caribbean Scottish over the past 50 years. It’s a marvellous text describing the complications immigrants have adapting to or assimilating within new cultures. How would you respond to being called “duck”? A common term of endearment in Britain, but for a migrant utterly baffling.

How would you be able to assimilate / adapt into a new country, that is part of four countries that make up the United Kingdom, but confusingly three of those countries make up Great Britain. Your nationality is British but it’s really Welsh, Scottish or English. Northern Ireland is part of the UK, and your passport identifies you as "UK". Confused? These island nations have an incredible diverse range of cultural perspectives and niches to discover. These recommended resources are to help you look beyond this Royal / London obsessed tea drinking British stereotypical image.
