Circulation Module 11: What To Do When

Downtime Duties

Assisting patrons is the heart of what we do at Circulation. But sometimes, there just aren't any patrons to be assisted. If that is the case, look around the room and see what you can do. Ask yourself the following questions.

Are there books on the shelves that can be made into carts?

Are there any carts to be shelved?

Have I shelf-read or cleaned my section recently?

If all those tasks have been completed, never fear! There are still things for you to do.

  • Clean the counter, both levels, thoroughly. Move objects and clean under the objects and use hand sanitizer to remove ink stains. This includes the surfaces in the Circulation workroom.

  • Clean the black bookshelves at the Circulation desk using a liquid cleaner, not just a feather duster. Clean the shelves of the Lost and Found as well.

  • Vacuum the carpet as needed.

  • Shelve media (CDs and DVDs).

  • Make a round of the main floor, pick up magazines and newspapers, throw away trash and place recycling in the proper container, and straighten furniture.

  • If you want, you can also take on a special project. This includes but is not limited to: making a display for the library, or job shadowing other departments within the library. To take on a Special Project, get in contact with Sienna to discuss what you would like to do.

  • If all the above tasks have been completed, you may read or work on homework. If you choose to do homework, please keep your books and papers tidy. Circulation workers are permitted to use laptops while at the desk, however, headphones are not allowed. Make sure you are attentive and polite to people approaching the desk, if you are not being attentive to our patrons, your laptop privileges will be revoked. Laptop and Homework time is an earned privilege and will be taken away if abused.
