Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service of Hutchins Library available to current Berea College faculty, staff, and students using their Berea College network login. All other patrons will be referred to the Madison County Public Library.
We borrow materials that are not available in Hutchins Library or other Berea College departmental libraries for the educational, research, and general needs of the campus community.
If you want to borrow materials from other libraries, track the progress of those requests, and be able to receive articles electronically, you will need to login to your Hutchins Library account.
Before you place a request through Interlibrary Loan, check to make sure that Hutchins doesn't already own it. To do so, click the link "Library Catalog" below. Then search for the item by both author and title. If we do not own it, then proceed to request the item via Interlibrary Loan using the links on the left.
Patrons needing to borrow materials via interlibrary loan are assumed to have exhausted Hutchins Library and other departmental library resources. If so, loans are requested as follows:
Patrons will be notified by email when borrowed material has arrived.
Any item on loan can be picked up at the Circulation Desk. Items with due dates should also be returned to the Circulation Desk.
Keep in mind, interlibrary loan should not be used for:
Costs for materials borrowed will be handled as follows:
Limitations that are placed on the use of borrowed material by the lending library will be honored.
Patrons may have a maximum of 50 active ILL requests at any given time, which includes both copy and loan requests. Any further requests submitted after the maximum is reached will be denied. If a patron has a unique circumstance and needs to request more than 50 items at any given time, they must reach out to Isaac Sexton prior to submitting further requests.
The length of the loan is determined by the lending library. Renewals must be requested at least 5 days before the due date.
Conditions of this service are governed by the National Library Code (adopted by the American Library Association), the Copyright Law, Title 17, U.S. Code, and special interlibrary loan agreements with consortia libraries.
