Looking for Lilith was founded by Shannon Woolley Allison, Trina Fischer, and Jennifer Thalman Kepler in New York City, 2001. LFL is committed to collaboratively creating original theatre based on women’s history, both oral and written, both past history and history in the making. This feminist ensemble theatre company is dedicated to lifting up unheard and “underheard” stories. Defining Infinity, an original play, explores individuals’ stories about the spectrums of both gender and sexual orientation. Enlightening, thoughtful, and powerful, the play shares experiences of queer folks from all along both of these spectrums.

Hutchins Library is pleased to announce that Dr. Valeria Watkins Solo Art Exhibit, "Truth is Truth," is now on display in our main floor during the month of  February 2019. This month-long exhibit honors Black History Month. The exhibit can be viewed during library regular hours. It is free and open to the public.

In addition, there will be an artist reception on Thursday, February 7, 2019 at 5pm in the library's main floor. Light refreshments will be provided. This event is also free and open to the public.

Dr. Valeria Watkins, the artist, provided the following statement on the exhibit:

Hello and welcome to a month long exhibit in honor of Black History Month. This 2019 solo exhibit is titled “Truth is Truth” and includes 15 new amazing and beautiful acrylic paintings.

Each paintings is an expression of the creative process that I find within the stillness of my meditation. I enjoy working with all the beautiful colors of the acrylic paints. I use various tools which helps to add to the paintings structure.

Putting combinations of colors on canvas is pretty cool! The right combinations really make the creative process exciting and challenging. I am inspired to follow that intuitive spark of creativity within me which can be both bold and elusive.

I strive to convey a freedom that can move the viewer. Spend time with each painting and enjoy! And leave your comments.

Please feel free to check out my online Art Gallery if you want to see more of my work! www.valeriawatkins.foliotwist.com.

Get out your glue-sticks and wigs, because this month's mini-lesson is all about Drag!

Vocabulary!

Gender Identity: A sense of one’s self as trans*, genderqueer, woman, man, or some other identity, which may or may not correspond with the sex and gender one is assigned at birth.

Gender Expression: How one expresses oneself, in terms of dress and/or behaviors.  Society, and people that make up society characterize these expressions as "masculine,” “feminine,” or “androgynous.”  Individuals may embody their gender in a multitude of ways and have terms beyond these to name their gender expression(s).

Drag King:  A person (often a woman) who appears as a man. Generally in reference to an act or performance.  This has no implications regarding gender identity.

Drag Queen:  A person (often a man) who appears as a woman. Generally in reference to an act or performance. This has no implications regarding gender identity.

Cross Dresser (CD): A word to describe a person who dresses, at least partially, as a member of a gender other than their assigned sex; carries no implications of sexual orientation. Has replaced “Transvestite”

Valentine's Day, February 14, is a day consecrated by custom to the celebration of romantic love. The observance dates back to medieval times, but in twentieth-century America, Valentine's Day—like other occasions that are linked to sentiment, such as Mother's Day—has become a ritual appendage of consumer culture. Attempts to link Valentine's Day and its emphasis on worldly love to an early martyr (or pair of martyrs) of the Christian church have been discredited, and historians have come to attribute the connection between romance and February 14 to Geoffrey Chaucer (1340?–1400), the English poet and author of The Canterbury Tales.

Valentine's Day is celebrated in song and film as synonymous with romantic love. It is a day for dances and gala balls, the advertising of “honeymoon suites” for married couples whose ardor may have waned over the years, and for decorating public places with heart shapes pierced by the arrow of an often visible and cherubic Cupid. Over the years the holiday has spread beyond England and America to Europe, Asia, and other English-speaking countries such as South Africa and Australia, and production and sales of Valentine cards have become a worldwide phenomenon.
