As long as I've lived on this earth (which is roughly 20 years and 7 months) I've always liked my stories to be linear and easy to follow. I think it shows a great amount of talent to allow your audience insight into your mind and have it make complete sense. However, I also find that there are very many plays that do not do this for the sole purpose of leaving the meaning up to the audience. It's important to have these types of plays in the world to show other people how far art can go. Waiting for Godot by Samuel Beckett is one of those plays.

A seminal work of twentieth-century drama, Waiting for Godot was Samuel Beckett's first professionally produced play. It opened in Paris in 1953 at the tiny Left Bank Theatre de Babylone, and has since become a cornerstone of twentieth-century theater. The story line revolves around two seemingly homeless men waiting for someone--or something--named Godot. Vladimir and Estragon wait near a tree on a barren stretch of road, inhabiting a drama spun from their own consciousness. The result is a comical wordplay of poetry, dreamscapes, and nonsense, which has been interpreted as a somber summation of mankind's inexhaustible search for meaning. Beckett's language pioneered an expressionistic minimalism that captured the existentialism of post-World War II Europe. His play remains one of the most magical and beautiful allegories of our time.

 

Waiting for Godot is what we call an absurdist play. It is meant to be a comedy with very little to say about anything. It's about two men waiting near a tree for a person named Godot (riveting stuff, I know). However, while they're waiting, they realize it's taking Godot a long time to get there. They meet two men named Lucky and Pozzo, who both claim to be messengers for Godot, saying that Godot will be there if they wait long enough. And that's it. That's the plot of the play. It has many comedic moments that are easy to understand, but the deeper meaning behind the play has been theorized by many people. My theory is that they're waiting for God, but God doesn't quite want to meet them. 

 

But in order to create your own speculations, you're going to have to read it yourself. Since it's only two acts, it should be an easy read for newcomers in the theatre scene (or just about anyone who hasn't read an absurdist play before.) Since this was one of the first plays I've read, I recommend it highly to anyone looking to catch the theatre bug. In Kay’s historical play, Rebecca, the main character, a trail-blazing midwife, shares her memories from 1811. Rebecca didn’t have a home to keep, but her adventures with her husband, legendary American frontiersman Daniel Boone, made up for what was missing.

Conflict at the Confluence: Native American Cultural Values and Cooperation in a Time of Resource Development. Vocabulary! 

This is another long post, because there are so many things that need to be covered!

Gender: A social construct used to classify a person as a man, woman, or some other identity. Fundamentally different from the sex one is assigned at birth.

Gender Expansive: An umbrella term used for individuals who broaden their own culture’s commonly held definitions of gender, including expectations for its expression, identities, roles, and/or other perceived gender norms. Gender expansive individuals include those who identify as transgender, as well as anyone else whose gender in some way is seen to be stretching the surrounding society’s notion of gender.

Gender Fluid: A person whose gender identification and presentation shifts, whether within or outside of societal, gender-based expectations. Being fluid in motion between two or more genders.

Gender Outlaw: A person who refuses to be defined by conventional definitions of male and female.

Gender Non conforming (GNC):  people who do not subscribe to gender expressions or roles expected of them by society.

Gender Queer: A person whose gender identity and/or gender expression falls outside of the dominant societal norm for their assigned sex, is beyond genders, or is some combination of them.

Gender Variant: A person who varies from the expected characteristics of the assigned gender.

Goes beyond transgender to question the need for gender classification. A memoir told anecdotally, Tomboy follows author and zine artist Liz Prince through her early childhood into adulthood and explores her ever-evolving struggles and wishes regarding what it means to "be a girl."  From staunchly refuting anything she perceived as being "girly" to the point of misogyny, to discovering through the punk community that your identity is whatever you make of it, regardless of your gender, Tomboy is as much humorous and honest as it is at points uncomfortable and heartbreaking.
