Educational Technology supports the Ensemble Video platform, that integrates and enables users to easily insert videos, submit videos and publish video playlists inside your LMS.  Faculty members need to contact Anthony Basham to create their Berea College licensed Ensemble Video instructor account.

We should always be extremely careful with any data connected to students and their privacy.

Best practices would generally have or prefer any recordings with student images / data taken be behind the Berea security whenever feasible (and therefore such videos can be linked through Ensemble).  Berea defines photographic, video or electronic images of students taken and maintained by the college as directory information which may be disclosed and does not have to be kept behind a secure firewall.

The "FERPA Quick Guide document" is also very helpful in explaining them as well.  I recommend viewing the whole document. 

"What is and what is not an educational record? 

Education records include but are not limited to: grades, class rosters, papers, tests, student course schedules and financial records, and emails and notes about students that are not “sole possession” records. The following are NOT educational records: 

• Notes kept on students by a faculty/staff member for their own records or reference that are not shared with others (called “sole possession records”). 

• Informal peer graded papers and exams prior to the grade being recorded in an instructor’s grade book. "

"What can NEVER be “directory information”? 

• Social security number, birthdate, race/ethnicity, gender, nationality/citizenship, grades, GPA, financial information, pins/passwords. 

• All emails sent with any protected student data must be encrypted. Please see Berea’s email policy concerning FERPA-protected data."

Assistance for Students

The Student Information below will help with the steps for submitting and uploading your video assignment.

There are three ways to record, save, and upload your videos to Ensemble:

  1. Go to the "Start" icon in the bottom left-hand corner of your Berea laptop. Open up the "Camera" application. Once you're in "Camera," switch from Camera to Video mode. There you can record and save your video. Once you have recorded and saved your video, click on  Ensemble Video Dropbox "assignment" link. Fill in your name and email into the required info fields on the “Upload Submission” page. Upload your video and be sure to allow it to upload 100%. If you click out of that page too quickly, it will not completely upload and you will have to start over.
  2. If you have a smartphone, you can also use that to make and save short videos. Then you can connect your phone to your laptop with a USB cord and upload your video. Once you have recorded and saved your video, click on Ensemble Video Dropbox "assignment" link. Fill in your name and email into the required info fields on the “Upload Submission” page. Upload your video and be sure to allow it to upload 100%. If you click out of that page too quickly, it will not completely upload and you will have to start over.
  3. If you have an iPhone, you can download the Ensemble Video App. Use the “Video Dropbox” link in this app to upload your video directly into Ensemble Video Dropbox assignment link and page. Ensemble automatically generates the QR code on the submission page.  The student can scan the QR code with their smartphone while viewing the Ensemble Video Dropbox submission page on Moodle while on their laptop.

NOTE: If you have an Android, the Ensemble Video App is not available. Androids support the EnsembleLive App, which is live-streaming, and will not work for recording, saving, and uploading videos. So, you will need to use a USB cord to connect your Android to your laptop.”
